The 3d animation process

Filed under: Tech and Media — Tags: — admin @ 6:32 am

The 3d animation process
3D animation represents the same characters and the same spaces that you see in 2D animation; and yet it is unmistakably different. What is it that 3D animation adds to the mix over what 2D provides? The answer is, 3D animation brings in an illusion of depth and space to a portrayal. The contribution of the 3D animation method is that it is able to show images in stereo, with depth and perspective the way things are in the real world. Before computing power became widely available, 2D animation methods achieved animated motion in a very laborious way with less impressive results. Artists drew each frame of a theme on a separate sheet of paper, colored them and photographed them, and progressed in their film, frame by painful frame. Today, digital 3D animators put every bit as much effort into their work, but only for a few frames and scenes. The 3D animation software takes over and animates the single frames created by the animators. Let us go over the steps that professional 3D animators go through to do their magic. Modeling is the first step in the journey to a walking and talking animated character on film. Modeling in 3D computer animation, is the process of creating on a computer, a mathematical or theoretical definition of the appearance of an object. It could appear as a wireframe model, or a plastic model. It can appear as a series of 2D images, and is a complete enough description of the object to behave in virtual space in keeping with the laws of physics. Models are usually created by 3D software and not manually. Texturing is the next thing to think of. Texturing is the process by which different areas of an animated object are programmed to take on the appearance of the kind of material it is supposed to be made of, the color it is supposed to have, and the surface quality it is to have. Every object or character in a film is three-dimensional, with only one angle of it showing at a time. Along with texturing, the creator will have to do the programming necessary to rotate each object to bring the right face to show. Lighting is almost an entire science by itself in 3D animation. 3D software always gives animators the choice to light an object from any angle, with one or more of several choices of light. The software automatically makes each surface in the animated film reflect or absorb the light in a manner that is in keeping with its material, shape and texture. Rendering is the final step in the main process. This is the process by which the computer, following the mathematical model created in the modeling step, creates an actual image in the way instructed in all the lines of modeling code. A model is an algorithmic or a mathematical way of describing how exactly animated images are to appear, written down in computer language. The description contains information on the geometrical description of the scene, the way the scene is lit, the quality and texture of the components of the scene, etc. The image on the other hand, is an actual visible manifestation of these mathematical descriptions. Rendering is a very processor intensive task and takes quite a while to accomplish. When all this is done you have a final image, as complex or simple as you made it. As fascinating as all of this is, this can be very hard work taming the computer to create art.
